Moves

Except for castling, a move is the transfer of a chessman from one square to another square which is either vacant or occupied by an opponent’s chessman.

You can only move your chessmen. You cannot move your opponent’s chessman.

You can only move a chessman to one of the squares of the chessboard.

You can make only one move per turn.

If it is your turn, and you can make a legal move, you must make a legal move. You cannot “pass”.

Players must alternate in making one move per turn and the player with the white chessmen commences the game.

You cannot make a move which leaves your king in check, even to checkmate your opponent’s king or produce a stalemate.

In some high-speed chess games, the player making an illegal move thereby loses the game, and the opponent may go through the motions of capturing the king to show the illegal move. In fact, the game was already lost by the player making the illegal move. In such cases, you can move a pinned chessman and leave your own king in check to capture the opponent’s king, because you are only showing that an illegal move was made and the game ended.
