Forbidden moves

You cannot move your chessman to the square it is already on, nor to a square already occupied by one of your other chessmen.

You cannot move your king to a square attacked by one or more of your opponent’s chessmen, even if they cannot move because they are shielding an attack on your opponent’s king.

You cannot move one of your chessmen if doing so would expose your king to check.

WHITE

The white queen is shielding an attack by the black rook at e8 on the white king. The queen cannot move out of the line of fire, but can move forward and capture the rook, or move to any other square between the black rook and the white king. The queen cannot move diagonally to capture the black bishop at c5 because the white king would then be in check by the black rook at e8.
